The Fledgling
Winner of the 2022 Goshen Peace Play Contest.
The Fledgling is a one-act allegory about xenophobia with a running time of approximately 30 minutes.
Dog and Cat find their peace disturbed when a recently fledged bird appears on their fire escape and refuses to leave. As the newcomer calls to its mother in a wild bird language the two domestics do not understand, suspicion and fear arise, and Dog and Cat begin to struggle over the fate of the young bird. This play explores the seductive nature of xenophobia and the power of empathy to combat it.
The Fledgling was produced at Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana in October 2022.
